Aegis
With roots in Greek mythology, the aegis originally referred to an animal skin, commonly of a goat or lion, or breastplate that conferred supernatural physical protection on its wearer.
This collection is a study of the effects of the aegis on the human psyche. The pieces attempt to depict primal and abstract human needs of safety and security as tactile, ornamental shields.
The presence of physical, emotional, financial and social protections, our modern-day goatskin cloak/breastplate, assuages our insecurities, and elicits psychological and physiological responses of calmness and ease.
The aegis is a shield with which human lives can be led with meaning, agency and potential.
